Yet Another Week Past

Current Location: Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup, Washington

Another fun and busy week in review. Malcolm worked part-time (mostly just mornings) this past week, and an occasional hour or two in the evenings. Most of the rest of his time most afternoons was spent finishing up work on the granddaughters’ play house. Cole worked quite a bit on it, too. They both finished up the last final details today and the girls “moved in”.

Last Sunday, we attended church with Elizabeth, Cole and the girls. Elizabeth played her flute during the opening songs for each of two services. After church, Elizabeth and crew were heading to a friend’s birthday party, so we ran around and did some shopping, including a run to IKEA.

One day this week, Elizabeth took Violet over to visit and spend the night with a friend of hers. While Elizabeth and Violet took care of that visit, we took Scarlet out for a special dinner at Trackside PIzza and later for some yummy frozen yogurt at Elements in downtown Puyallup. She was going to spend the night with us, but decided she wanted Mommy and Daddy instead, so Elizabeth drove down to retrieve her.

Thursday was Malcolm’s birthday. Elizabeth took him out for the day while Val kept the girls. She and the girls cooked birthday cupcakes while Elizabeth surprised Malcolm with a horseback ride. They had a great time and got to visit with several animals after their ride.

Besides finishing the playhouse today, we all met in downtown Puyallup for the weekly farmers market. It’s always a pretty big event with dozens of vendors selling lots of different items. One reason we were there was that the Puyallup Main Street Association was giving away free tickets to the Washington State Fair to people who presented a receipt for a purchase from a downtown merchant. We had one receipt from a recent visit to get frozen yogurt. While at the farmers market this morning, we bought coffee at a nearby coffee shop and took that receipt over to get another free fair ticket. Fair tickets are $10 in advance or $12.50 at the gate, so that’s a pretty good savings.

Speaking of the Fair, our time at the Fairgrounds campground comes to an end tomorrow. We have to leave to make room for incoming vendors (the fair starts this coming Friday). We head a few miles north to the Seattle KOA for one night, then back south and east to the Auburn city campground for a week. We test drove the route to each campground last Sunday afternoon so we would know where we are going.

Another Week in Review

Current Location: Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup, Washington

Been busy again the last week or so. Malcolm worked during the days again the past week. In the afternoons, he would come over to the house and he and Cole worked on the playhouse. Wednesday night they took the night off as we all went to a ball game (more on that later). With wet, cool and windy weather forecast starting Friday, Malcolm and Cole worked until dark on Thursday evening getting the roof shingled. Malcolm took off a little early and came over around 1:00 to work on trim and started working on the porch railings. Here are some pictures.

Wednesday night, all of us went to a Tacoma Raniers ballgame. The girls earned free tickets for reading books from the Puyallup library. We also got a free hot dog dinner as part of the deal. On the evening we went, there were local firefighters and police at the stadium with various things to give away (firehats) and various vehicles the kids could check out.

As part of the library program, the girls along with Mom and Dad got to line up out on the baseball field before the game.

During the game, Malcolm bought some noisemakers at the gift shop and brought them back to our seats. We caught the eye of one of the stadium workers in charge of various customer relations and eventually won a cheering contest which garnered us (we put Cole in charge of the winnings) a set of season passes for next year’s games.

Friday was Elizabeth’s birthday, so we all went to The Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma for dinner. The food was great and we had an enjoyable time.

This morning we ran a couple errands, just Malcolm and Val, and had lunch at Taco Time. Val has caught the cold the rest of us had last week so she wasn’t feeling the best. We headed out to Fox Island to Cole’s grandparents’ house on the Puget Sound to meet the rest of the family. We had dinner, then birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate Elizabeth’s birthday again, and Malcolm’s upcoming birthday.

Today’s weather was pretty yucky. Some pretty stiff winds blew in the rain today, knocking out power here and there. Our power was out some period of time starting at 12:20 (according to our microwave, which shows the last known time on the display when power is restored). There was also a lot of debris on the road like leaves, small twigs and lots of pine needles.

A Long Week in Review

Current Location: Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup, Washington

Since we last talked, a lot has gone on here. Malcolm is working full-time this week. To better coordinate with those back in Nashville, he has been working normal hours for there, which means 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM here. That worked out well. Nana got to visit with the grandchildren, then pick up Pa so he could visit the rest of the afternoon and evening. He plans on working full-time again next week, then part-time off and on the rest of our visit here (four more weeks after this past week).

Our birthday gift to both granddaughters was to pitch in on building a playhouse for them. Cole’s family pitched in some money towards the effort as are Cole and Elizabeth. On Tuesday evening, Cole and Malcolm went to Home Depot to pick up the first load of lumber and concrete footers. On Wednesday evening, they put together the entire floor.

On Thursday, we took a break from construction and met at the park in downtown Puyallup for the last of their summer concerts. We spread out blankets, ate sandwiches for dinner and listened to music until it was getting too chilly (we work shorts and short-sleeved shirts). We had ridden our bikes to the park (about 3/4 mile) instead of trying to park the truck downtown (it was a crowded concert).

Speaking of riding bikes, we rode bikes to lunch a couple days this week. One day we all rode (Val, Malcolm, Elizabeth and the girls) to Don’s Drive-In just the other side of the fairgrounds (about 3 blocks away).

We also rode bikes up the street (about 4-5 blocks) another day to Spark’s Deli.

On Thursday evening, Malcolm, Cole and Elizabeth all came down with colds. Malcolm worked part of the day Friday after getting up late. The rest of the crew came down to the trailer for dinner (steaks on the grill). After dinner, the girls headed up to the house and the guys went to Home Depot to get framing lumber.

Today, Malcolm and Cole were very busy framing up the playhouse. Cole first painted the base with a couple coats of sealant paint. They took a break at lunchtime to meet the girls at Taco Del Mar, then stopped by Home Depot to pick up some more supplies on the way back to the house. By early afternoon, they had all four walls framed and installed on the base. Then it was on to making roof trusses, which was a slower process and overlapped dinner. They had two trusses in place and put in the porch supports after dinner and decided to call it a day.

There may be more construction on the playhouse tomorrow. Church is up in the air since the majority of the congregation went on the annual church weekend campout. They are having one service, but we’re going to see when it is and how all our cold sufferers are feeling in the morning.

Catching Up and a Move

Current Location: Nashville KOA, Nashville, Tennessee

On Monday, Malcolm drove the truck in to work. He called the local Ford dealer to check to see if they could take care of a few items on the truck before our trip (oil and filter change, fuel filters changed, tires balanced, air filter changed and shock absorbers checked). They said bring it on in. Malcolm left work at 4:00 and stopped by to pick up Val. We stopped by the local car rental place and picked up a rental car, then drove on over to the Ford dealer to drop off the truck. After dropping off the truck, we had dinner at Taziki’s then headed back to the house.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Ford dealer called and said the truck was ready to go (didn’t need shocks). Malcolm left at 4:00 again, just as a pretty good line of thunderstorms rolled through the area. That slowed him down coming home. The storms had passed by the time he got to the trailer to pick up Val. The power got knocked out during the storm. Traffic was bad getting to the Ford dealer, so Malcolm called the rental car company to tell them we wouldn’t return the car before they closed. They said drop it off and put the keys in the key drop and they’d just charge us for the day’s rental.

We picked up the truck, had dinner at NYNY Pizza then headed over to drop off the car. Traffic was still bad in the area, but we were able to bypass it, fuel up the car, drop it off and drop the keys in the slot, then drive back to the trailer where we found the power was still out. Fortunately, the trailer was still fairly cool from earlier in the day and the recent rain storm cooled the outside air off into the mid-70’s, though it was still humid.

We opened windows and turned on the power fan in the ceiling to draw air through and eventually went on to bed. Fortunately, our iPads, computers and the mifi unit all had good battery charges.

When we woke up this morning, still no power. Malcolm decided to work at home during the morning until his laptop battery ran out of power. We ended up driving over to Camping World (who also was without power, but was using a generator to power part of the store) and bought a small Honda generator and a Fantastic Fan and cover to put in the front bathroom.

Generator in action

We stopped by the gas station and fueled up the new generator, then took it home to the trailer to hook it up. Malcolm couldn’t find his 30 amp to 15 amp adapter, so it was back to Camping World (which fortunately is literally next door) and picked up one of those. Once back, he had the generator running and the trailer powered up. Our EMS initially was faulting saying that the generator power had a floating ground (Honda generators are known for doing that), so Malcolm searched the internet and found the solution and had us powered up in no time. The new generator is only a 2000W unit, so it won’t run an air conditioner, but at least will power up smaller stuff and run the converter which charges the 12V batteries on board.

By mid-afternoon, we still had no power. The outside temperature was in the mid-90’s, the humidity was high and the inside temperature was close to 100. We were miserable and the cat was looking pretty miserable as well. We decided to take a ride in the (air conditioned) truck to the front of Jellystone to check on when power might be restored. They said the power company kept saying they were working on it, but couldn’t make any promises. Best they could say was “maybe tonight”.

We drove over to the KOA and walked into their registration area. We asked if they had power (yes, they did) and if they had a space our 42′ trailer would fit into. The gentleman at the desk looked at the computer for a bit and said he had one back-in space that was listed as 46′ long. We paid for it and said we’d be back with the trailer. Turns out there was a pretty steady stream of campers from Jellystone doing the exact same thing. We hitched up the trailer and moved it to KOA, hooked up and turned on the air conditioners.

While the rig cooled down, we drove up the street to Logan’s Roadhouse for dinner and dessert, then back to the trailer, which had cooled down fairly well. Malcolm got ambitious and went ahead and installed our new Fantastic Fan in the front bath. He will install the matching vent cover at another time, to allow the self-leveling sealant time to skin over up top.

We were fortunate enough to get our site through Saturday, so we’ll be right on schedule for heading out west.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Current Location: Jellystone Park, Nashville, Tennessee

Malcolm is feeling much better now. He felt well enough to work all day at the trailer on Tuesday, but had problems getting sleep that night. He was pretty much worn out on Wednesday morning and spent the day just relaxing. Thursday he was back at the office and worked Thursday and Friday there. He has been driving the truck into town this stay, instead of renting a second vehicle.

Though our space is sort of small here at Jellystone (about 55 feet long), we’re otherwise enjoying the peace and quiet at the back end of the campground. All of the children-friendly activities and, thus, the family campers are all located towards the front of the park. We are also further away from the traffic noise on the Briley, especially the bridge over the Cumberland River which is close to the back side of the KOA.

This afternoon we enjoyed sitting outside for a while, especially since our entire row emptied out and left us a decent view of something other than the broad side of a Class A RV. Saturday evening, we rode our bikes up to the ice cream shop in the park and had some pretty good hand dipped ice cream cones.

One fix/mod we did on Saturday is to better secure our couch to the back wall of the trailer. The factory had put two screws through the back board of the couch into the wall, but both screws were simply screwed into the wallboard, which did absolutely nothing towards anchoring the couch. During a recent hard braking incident, we found that the couch apparently flipped foward and the back of the couch broke the handle on the window opener.

We picked up an eight-foot long 1×4 and brought it home. Malcolm cut it to length between the two “end tables” mounted to the side walls of the trailer. He was able to actually anchor the board to five different studs behind the wallboard, so it isn’t going anywhere now. We pushed the couch back against the new anchor rail and drove screws through the couch board into the anchor rail. The couch shouldn’t go anywhere now.

Other than that, we’ve just been doing a little shopping and preparing for our trip out west, which starts on Saturday, August 1st. We will be getting the truck serviced in preparation for the trip sometime during the week.
