Working Week Wrap-Up

Current Location: Westlake RV Resort, Houston, Texas

We’ve been here several days now. Malcolm worked during the days at the office on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our location here a few miles west of the office is fairly convenient from a drive-time standpoint. The average trip to the office or back home is around 25-30 minutes.

We mentioned in a previous post that Malcolm had replaced the ceiling-mounted speakers from the trailer’s home theater system with ones from a Bose Acoustimass 6 system Malcolm purchased on Amazon. The remainder of that system was installed after we got here.

We quickly found out that the inexpensive home theater amplifier/DVD player that came with the trailer wasn’t quite up to the task of driving all the speakers correctly. On Thursday, Malcolm came home with a new low-profile Marantz home theater receiver. Like the Bose system, it was an outgoing model so he got a good price on it at Best Buy.

With all that out of the way, we found that the cabinet holding all the equipment tends to get pretty warm with the door closed. Malcolm picked up a variable speed computer fan with a USB connector and plugged it in up in the cabinet. The door is slightly propped open with a pencil for right now, though we plan to figure out a more elegant solution at some point.

We checked out the pool here at the campground and found it was really nice. It is heated (not sure if electrically or via the Texas sun). They also have a nice spa. The facilities here are really well-maintained and clean.

Saturday was shopping day. We stopped by a mall to look for a couple gifts and drop by the Apple Store to pick up a new power supply for Malcolm’s computer and a couple new cords to replace some older, fraying cords. We also went to IKEA and grabbed a couple items for the trailer. We also hit Costco and dropped some spring cleaning remnants off at Goodwill. Later in the evening, we went to Half Price Books to look over their used record collection and picked up a few records.

This morning we went to Christ Church PCA in Katy (our usual Houston-area church) and had Tex-Mex food for lunch. Right now we are relaxing in the trailer preparing for another week of work for Malcolm.

A Birthday Visit

Current Location: Nashville KOA, Nashville, Tennessee

On Sunday we went to church again at First Baptist. We met Malcolm’s co-worker and his family after the service and talked for a bit before finding a pretty nice little Mexican restaurant for Mother’s Day lunch. It wasn’t too busy but the food was really good. They were giving all the mothers there a free small dessert. We took care of a couple little things around the trailer and mainly just bummed around the rest of the day.

Malcolm took out the two fixed shelves in the top half of our kitchen pantry and added shelves via the side rails, clips and board method like we used in the tall half bathroom cabinet. Here are some pictures.

We also moved our dining table a few inches away from the theater seat. It wasn’t centered between the dining room chairs, but now it is. Malcolm also installed screens on the refrigerator vents. We used these that we bought from Amazon. They were actually too long (they have correct size ones, too, but we clicked the wrong link), so Malcolm cut them down to fit. Should keep the flying critters out of the refrigerator compartment.

On Wednesday, David drove up to visit us overnight. Wednesday was his birthday, so we took him out to eat at McNamara’s (the Irish place), then wandered around the mall. Malcolm bought his birthday present in the Lego store while we were there.

Today, David and Val rode downtown on the shuttle and wandered around the town for a while before heading up to Malcolm’s office. We walked around and introduced David around then headed down to eat lunch. After lunch, Val and David headed back downtown to catch the return shuttle since David needed to head down the road.

This evening we went out to eat at Pie Five pizza and stopped by the mall to exchange a mattress pad we had bought for the couch bed (wrong size – we accidentally bought a full size instead of a queen). The couch bed sleeps “OK” according to David. Malcolm laid down on it briefly and decided it wouldn’t be too bad of a place to sleep if needed.

Tomorrow is Malcolm’s last day of work here before we fly out next week to Seattle.

Organizational Mods

Current Location: Nashville KOA, Nashville, Tennessee

Back to work for Malcolm this week. He’s enjoying having found a better route into town (coming in from the north to avoid various construction projects and inevitable downtown road closures around the Broadway area for various events. Val has been busy doing various little organizational projects as well as working on some sewing and crochet projects.

Speaking of projects and organization, we’ve also done a few small organizational mods. Most of them are repeats of ones we had done to the previous trailer. One is using large paint stirring sticks and cup hooks to make hangers for the various measuring cups and measuring spoons. The sticks are cut down to size and mounted on the back side (inside) of the pantry or cabinet doors. Cup hooks are screwed in and now you have a place to hang these items within reach.

Another project Malcolm tackled was some way to organize the various stereo and computer components in the cabinet above the TV. Each time we travel, we find them all bunched up in disarray. Plus, most of these components generate heat and were stacked right on top of each other – not good for heat dissipation.

We looked and shopped around for some type of shelving or rack type system to mount items on where they weren’t stacked right on top of each other. We finally found a solution at The Container Store – wire type letter trays in the office department. Wiring is run out the open sides (the bottom and back have wire mesh). The computer (bottom shelf), Apple TV and Blu-Ray player (middle shelf) just sit on their respective shelves. We will evaluate if we need to secure them better after our next move.

The home theater component (top) was about 1/4″ too wide to fit inside one of the trays, but perfectly fit between the raised tabs on the sides that are used to interlock with a tray stacked on top. We used a couple pieces of velcro to hold it in place on top, then another piece to secure the wireless router on top of that.

Not really a mod, but more of a necessity. We found birds flitting around the front of our trailer, flying in and out. We found that they had started a nest inside the pin box on the front of the trailer. After debating several methods of preventing the nests, we decided on a low tech solution for now since we’ll be stationary for about 4 more weeks. Some blue painters tape and a large lawn and leaf bag covered the whole assembly rather nicely.

Not the prettiest, but it works.

Work Week in Nashville

Current Location: Nashville KOA, Nashville, Tennessee

This week is a work week for Malcolm. He is working at the downtown office in Nashville. Val caught up on laundry this week and we’ve done a little shopping here and there. Typical “stopped for work” activities, especially in Nashville. We’ve done a small mod here and there, nothing much to write up. The only one we did that was worthwhile documenting is in the next post we will put up – adding a 110V outlet to our theater seat unit.

Last night we had dinner out at McNamara’s Irish Pub, one of our favorite places to eat here in Nashville. It is highly recommended if you like Irish food.

Val rode the shuttle into town today and joined Malcolm for lunch at the office. Downtown is a mess of traffic right now,  between construction and the ubiquitous commercial or movie filming and concerts blocking downtown streets. Malcolm has started using a different route into town for work now that is just as quick as the old route used to be and avoids all of the aforementioned hot spots.

Packing and Repacking, Plus Mods

Current Location: Fort Toulouse Campground, Wetumpka, Alabama

Yesterday we decided to do one of the mods on our list – add adjustable shelves to the tall cabinets in the half bath. We purchased the side shelf rails and clips and a couple 10″ wide shelf boards. Malcolm knocked out the shelf in the middle section of the cabinet.

After removing the original shelf, the rails were attached on both sides after cutting them to length.

Malcolm cut the shelf boards to length and we decided where to put the shelves, installed the clips and shelves and put everything away.

We did the same for the cabinet above this one, but we’ll need another shelf or two for it (the home improvement store ran out of shelves).

Today, Malcolm started the process of bringing a bunch of stuff from our storage unit to the trailer. These are things that we’ll be taking to Kentucky next week and dropping off with Malcolm’s brother and Val’s sister. In exchange, we’re putting a bunch of stuff from our trailer into the storage unit. Since we’ll be in Nashville after traveling through Kentucky, we’ll have to make a day trip back down here to get our normal trailer stuff back out of storage and put it back in the trailer.

Lowe’s called today, as well, to let us know that the Maytag convection microwave we ordered online had arrived. Malcolm went over after work and picked it up. He removed the original microwave and our next door neighbor came over to help Malcolm wrestle with the new unit. No in-progress pictures, but here’s what it looks like installed.
